The 8-Week Moving Checklist
A moving checklist that works backward from move-in day: budget and hunt at 8 weeks, lease and logistics at 4, pack at 2, protect your deposit on day one.
Moving goes wrong in one of two ways: everything lands in the final weekend, or the boring admin (utilities, address changes, insurance) gets remembered after it mattered. A week-by-week structure prevents both.
8 weeks out
- Set your total budget — run the savings calculator if you haven't
- Confirm your move date and give notice if you're in a current lease
- Start the apartment hunt: shortlist areas, set alerts, book tours
- Check your credit report — landlords will
6 weeks out
- Tour apartments with a checklist (water pressure, outlets, locks, pests)
- Get renters insurance quotes — many leases require coverage from day one
- Line up proof of income, references, co-signer if needed
- Start a declutter pass: less stuff = cheaper, easier move
4 weeks out
- Sign the lease — read it first (deposit terms, guest policy, break clause)
- Book internet install for move-in day or before
- Schedule utility transfers: electric, gas, water in your name
- Reserve the truck, movers, or bribe the friends (officially)
- Start collecting free boxes (grocery stores, liquor stores, Buy Nothing)
2 weeks out
- File your USPS change of address
- Update your address: bank, work, subscriptions, deliveries
- Pack the rooms you don't use daily; label boxes by room
- Order day-one essentials to arrive at the new place
- Confirm elevator booking / parking for the truck if needed
Move week
- Pack a first-night box: sheets, towel, chargers, toiletries, snacks
- Defrost the fridge; eat down the pantry
- Take photos of your OLD place after it's empty (deposit evidence)
- Charge everything; get cash for helpers/tips
Move-in day
- Walk through and photo-document the NEW place before boxes come in
- Submit the move-in inspection form to your landlord
- Check: hot water, toilet flush, stove burners, every lock, smoke alarms
- Beds built and made before you're too tired to care
- Confirm utilities are live and in your name
