The Complete First Apartment Checklist
Every essential for a first apartment, room by room — kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, cleaning, living space, and the paperwork most people forget.
This is the list we'd hand a friend moving into their first place: the things you'll genuinely use in the first month, none of the stuff that ends up in a closet. Work through it room by room — and grab the printable version below so you can check things off as you go.
Before you sign anything
- Proof of income / pay stubs (landlords usually want 2–3x rent)
- Photo ID and, if needed, a co-signer lined up
- Security deposit + first month's rent saved
- Renters insurance quote (many leases require a policy from day one)
- Tour notes: water pressure, cell signal, outlets, locks, signs of pests
Kitchen
- Pots and pans (one skillet + one saucepan covers most meals)
- Baking sheet
- Chef's knife + cutting board
- Plates, bowls, glasses, mugs (4 of each is plenty)
- Silverware + a few cooking utensils (spatula, spoon, tongs)
- Can opener, bottle opener
- Food storage containers
- Dish soap, sponges, dish towels
- Trash can + bags
- Paper towels
Bedroom
- Mattress (this is the one thing not to cheap out on)
- Bed frame or foundation
- 2 sets of sheets + pillowcases
- Pillows and a comforter or duvet
- Hangers
- Curtains or blinds if the unit doesn't include them
- A lamp — overhead lighting alone gets old fast
Bathroom
- Shower curtain + liner + rings
- Bath towels and hand towels (2 each to start)
- Bath mat
- Plunger and toilet brush (buy these before you need them)
- Toilet paper
- Basic first-aid kit
Cleaning & maintenance
- All-purpose cleaner
- Broom + dustpan, or a stick vacuum
- Mop or floor wipes (for hard floors)
- Laundry basket + detergent
- Small toolkit: screwdriver, hammer, tape measure, allen keys
- Flashlight
- Command strips / renter-safe hooks
Living space
- Somewhere to sit (a secondhand couch or two chairs is fine to start)
- A small table — eating at the counter loses its charm
- Lamp or two
- Wi-Fi router (ordering internet 1–2 weeks before move-in saves a week of hotspotting)
- Surge protector power strips
Paperwork & setup
- Renters insurance active from your lease start date
- Utilities in your name: electric, gas, water (ask the landlord which you own)
- Internet install booked
- Change of address filed with USPS
- Move-in inspection photos of every room — timestamped, before boxes come in
- Copy of your signed lease saved somewhere you can find it
What you can skip (for now)
A toaster, an air fryer, decorative pillows, a full knife block, matching everything. Your first month will tell you what you actually reach for — buy the rest then, ideally secondhand.
